History & Significance

The idea of constructing a Jagannath temple in Hyderabad emerged in the early 1990s from a
group of Odia devotees who wished to have a divine abode of Lord Jagannath in the city.
Under the guidance of the Kalinga Cultural Trust, the construction of the
temple began, and it was consecrated in 2009.

The temple serves as a spiritual and cultural centre for Odia families as well as for
devotees from all communities. It reflects the philosophy of Lord Jagannath as the
“Lord of the Universe”, symbolising inclusiveness, equality and devotion beyond
caste, region and language.

Architecture & Deities

Shri Jagannath Temple in Hyderabad is designed as a replica of the Puri Jagannath Temple
in Odisha. The structure features:

• A tall and elegant shikhara (tower) rising above the sanctum.
• Red and earthy shades created using sandstone brought from Odisha.
• Intricate stone carvings and sculptures on the walls and pillars.

The main sanctum houses the wooden idols of:

• Lord Jagannath
• Lord Balabhadra
• Devi Subhadra

Along with the main shrine, there are smaller temples dedicated to:

• Goddess Lakshmi

• Navagrahas (the nine planetary deities)

• Nampally Railway Station – around 7–8 km

By Rail

The nearest major railway stations are Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) and
Secunderabad Junction. From there, you can hire a cab or use city buses to reach Banjara Hills.

By Air

From Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, the temple is roughly
30–35 km away. Taxis, app-based cabs and airport buses are available to reach Banjara Hills.
